✍️ The Background Story:
The inception of the Anarchist Quotes Collectives traces back to its roots on Twitter (X) in 2017, where it initially garnered attention by disseminating quotes from renowned anarchist philosophers. However, the platform’s acquisition by Elon Musk led to the ban of their account, forcing a fresh start in 2023. Seeking autonomy from susceptible capitalist platforms, the collective approached NGNM Network last summer to discuss creating and hosting a website. The timing was perfect because we were already planning to add new servers to our infrastructure, and of course, the NGNM shop cooperative agreed to fund the project.
Our collaborative efforts focused on crafting a tailor-made website featuring a distinctive interface designed specifically for quotes. Initially, we developed a scraper to extract all posts from their Twitter account and various sources, accumulating a total of 966 quotes. Then with the help of PangolinTurtle‘s BLAG-fortune quotes, we added another 1,018 quotes. After removing duplicates, we had a total of 1,838 anarchist quotes. The final phase involved programming the automation for seamlessly integrating these quotes into WordPress.
By the time we had a demo version ready, our friends from Federacion Anarquista heard about the project and offered help to translate the quotes and make a Spanish version. Great idea! But hey, we also have French-speaking members on the team, so why not go a step further and make a French version? So here we are, started as a modest Twitter account crushed by a tech giant, and now running 3 websites with distinct linguistic audiences. This is what solidarity and mutual aid in action look like!
