I’ve just finished watching a men’s Speed Skating racing event on NBC on my Direct TV Satellite. I was amazed by the direct tv deals I found when upgrading my service in preparation for the Winter Olympics! It was a 500 meter event with American Apolo Ohno in the competition against two Canadians, and one Korean racer. It was fantastic watching the clarity of the images as I was watching it in High Definition with a DVR receiver as well. At the end of the race there were two crashes and this resulted in one disqualification. I’ve always felt like Speed Skating was an amazing sport. It’s full of adrenaline and it’s a sport where anything can happen at anytime. The skaters are skiing on razor sharp edges and have to be very careful that they don’t injure themselves or others during the race. Add the amount of pressure they have at the moment and the speed of the race and you have a recipe for disaster. You can definitely see the look of desperation on their faces, especially when there are many false starts during the competition, almost exclusively during the 500 meters but occasionally on the other lengths as well. It’s great to see a photo finish though, especially when it’s too close to call at the end during the live feed. This sport is also an exhausting one as most of the skaters slow down near the end of the 1,000 meter race. Once the race is over, you can see the look of exhaustion on each of the skiers faces.

This has probably been one of the most exciting Olympic Games yet and I can’t wait to watch the next Speed Skating competition. I can’t imagine how it would feel to be one of those skaters or even being in the judges shoes, who need to make close decisions that affect the joy of the world.
